Professor Sfikakis qualified from the Medical School of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece and pursued postgraduate doctoral studies and trained in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology in academic units in Greece, at the Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington DC and at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD, where he served as Assistant Professor of Medicine.
Since 1995 serves at the Medical School of the NKUA and is currently the Head of the First Department of Propedeutic Internal Medicine and the Rheumatology Unit at Laikon University Hospital in Athens, and the Dean of the NKUA Medical School. He is a member of several international scientific committees, including the WHO- European Advisory Committee on Health Research. His main research interest is the field of the pathogenesis and treatment of the systemic rheumatic diseases, especially Adamantiades-Behcet's, and has authored/co-authored more than 240 original publications.
